A supernatural police procedural set in Derbyshire, "the ghost capital of England." A philandering investment broker is killed in a locked hotel room while in bed with his mistress — an iron spike driven through a straw doll and into his chest, the door bolted from inside, the window three floors up — and the only witness swears the killer was the ghost of his wife, who is alive and abroad. The case falls to gruff old-school skeptic Detective Sergeant Edwin "Big Ed" Cooper and his sharp new partner Detective Leslie Taylor, a young Japanese-British investigator whose cultural knowledge lets her read ritual clues no one else can.
