Ruth the Moabite retells the Book of Ruth as an intimate family drama set against famine and grief. Driven from Bethlehem by a third year of drought, Elimelech takes his wife Naomi and their two sons east to Moab, where the young men marry Moabite women — Ruth and Orpah — before all three men die, leaving Naomi bitter and empty in a foreign land. When Naomi turns home to Judah, Ruth refuses to leave her, binding herself to Naomi's people and God. In Bethlehem, Ruth's loyalty and labor draw the notice of Boaz, a kinsman-redeemer, and through Naomi's guidance and a public reckoning at the town gate, Ruth becomes his wife.
