Takeshi is marched into a freezing intake room and made to answer the consent questions out loud. He says yes to all of them, because the alternative is starving. The scientist apologizes before the needle goes in, and Takeshi hits the floor.

Alone in a reinforced cell, Takeshi's hands swell and his voice comes out wrong. Wings tear from his back, a tail slides across the concrete, and every distant sound floods in at once. The door opens on Shigy — with a tranquilizer rifle already raised.

Shigy lowers the rifle when he sees human eyes in the creature's face. He rushes an antidote and injects it, and Takeshi comes back to his own body. Shigy presses six vials into his hands and opens a hidden tunnel out of the city.

Takeshi climbs out into open forest and is jumped — the antidote bag is ripped off his chest. He wakes at night with nothing left to keep the creature down. A scream leads him to a clearing, where a boy turns into an owl-monster in front of him.

Takeshi changes and meets the owl-boy midair, driving him into the dirt. He stops with his jaws at the boy's throat, because it's a child. Later, in a cave, he admits what he is — and Akari's hand closes around her bow.

Akari brings them through a hidden wall into an armed village that agrees to take them in. The rule is simple: no transforming, and nobody suspects anything. A child hands Takeshi a flower while the Elder watches him from across the square.

Takeshi slips away alone at night and catches thieves emptying the village storerooms. He transforms in the open and scatters them. One man stays frozen — Hig, who knows his face, and runs to tell someone.
