Winnie is an Ursa war veteran — a small, scarred bear with retractable claws and a private rule against killing anything that can't fight back. Shot down on his way home from the Ursa Wars, he's dragged aboard the 100 Acre, an Archon warship where captives are caged in a vast black tree above a fighting pit and their terror is harvested as Loosh, the smoke the Archon lords vape from hookahs. Winnie wins his first bout and then refuses the kill, and the fear-smoke thins across the whole arena — a bear who won't kill feeds nobody. Crippled by the giant Humbaba and saved from execution by Piglet, the leader's smallest son, he's exiled instead to Earth, the prison planet, to wallow for years and be farmed slowly. But Earth is green and full of honey, and when he eats the forest empty, hunger walks him into a city under the Archon ship's shadow, into a boxing ring, and toward the cat-woman prizefighter who teaches him how to hit back. What follows is a friend found inside a spy drone, a brother traded for a broadcast death match, and one bear who beats the biggest Archon alive and then offers him a paw up — on live feed, to every world watching.
